PrItilata’s 94th Martyrdom Anniversary Observed

Gopal Chakraborty, Hello Kolkata:
Alongside the brave sons of undivided India, many courageous women also demonstrated extraordinary courage and sacrifice in the freedom struggle against British rule.
Women such as Matangini Hazra, Bina Das, Pritilata Waddedar, Kalpana Datta, Nanibala and Suniti Chowdhury played significant roles in India’s freedom movement.
On September 23, 1932, following the instructions of Masterda Surya Sen, Pritilata led an attack on the European Club in Chittagong along with several revolutionary comrades.
During the anti-British operation, a gunfight and exchange of bombs broke out, and Pritilata was injured.
However, rather than allowing herself to be captured by the British police, she consumed potassium cyanide and sacrificed her life.
At the age of just 21, the brave revolutionary passed away in the early hours of September 24.
To mark her 94th martyrdom anniversary, a floral tribute was offered at Pritilata’s statue on Red Road in Kolkata at 11 a.m. on September 24.
The programme was organised jointly by the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal, and Chattogram Parishad.
State Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Purnima Chakraborty and Information Director Jagadish Ray paid floral tributes at Pritilata’s statue and recalled her outstanding contribution to the freedom struggle.
Prominent members of Chattogram Parishad, including Pradip Kumar Dutta, Pijush Kanti Sen and Pradip Kumar Sen, were also present and paid tribute to the brave revolutionary Pritilata Waddedar.
