The 49th International Kolkata Book Fair commenced on January 22 at Central Park near Karunamoyee Bus Stand in Salt Lake and will continue till February 3. As book lovers immerse themselves in a vast collection of publications from India and abroad, one stall in particular is drawing exceptional attention this year.
Located near Gate No. 5 at Stall No. 325, the Kolkata High Court Mediation and Conciliation Committee’s stall is witnessing a steady influx of visitors every day. The stall has become a focal point for people keen to understand how mediation plays a vital role in resolving disputes and reducing the burden of pending cases.
In line with Supreme Court directives, members of the Kolkata High Court Mediation Committee are explaining to fairgoers how mediation effectively contributes to reducing the backlog of cases. Alongside informative books, committee members are engaging visitors with detailed discussions on the mediation process. Mediation office staff members Mohammad Naushad, Supriyo Banik, Suman Das, and Sayan Chatterjee are distributing leaflets and books related to mediation to attendees.
Under the guidance of the Chief Justice of the Kolkata High Court, Justice Sujoy Pal, the Mediation Committee functions under the leadership of Justice Arijit Bandyopadhyay, with Member Secretary Sudip Banerjee overseeing its operations. The committee remains active throughout the year across the state.
Dr. Subhasis Muhuri, Registrar (Insolvency) of the Kolkata High Court and Officer-in-Charge of the Mediation Committee, stated that the committee has been operational since 2009. He noted that mediators include retired Supreme Court and High Court judges, former IPS officers, advocates, architects, journalists, and other professionals.
It has also been informed that, apart from the Kolkata High Court, mediation-based dispute resolution is carried out through 72 ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) centres across the state. According to Dr. Muhuri, the objective of setting up the stall at the book fair is to spread awareness among the public about how disputes can be resolved through confidentiality, neutrality, and mutual understanding via mediation.
