Kolkata, September 25, 2026: Ahead of World River Day on September 27, Eden Realty Group has unveiled the structural blueprints and development roadmap for its proposed Banaras-style Ganga Ghats along the Howrah waterfront. The initiative forms a key part of the Group’s ₹150-crore riverfront development vision at Shalimar, anchored by its flagship project, Eden Devprayag.
The proposed ghats aim to bring together heritage, public spaces, urban ecology and modern development along the Hooghly. The project seeks to create a new public-private model for riverfront development while reconnecting communities with the river.
The planned riverfront will feature a 100-metre stepped and landscaped ghat along Lower Foreshore Road, Shibpur. A dedicated Ganga Aarti zone will form part of the development, along with a large banquet facility for cultural programmes, festivals and social gatherings. The banquet facility is planned with an open-air terrace, swimming pool overlooking the Ganga and an adjoining poolside lawn.
A continuous public promenade along the water’s edge will be complemented by heritage-themed architectural lighting, supporting evening Aarti and other cultural activities.
According to the development plan, riverbank protection measures have been designed on the basis of a study prepared by Jadavpur University, taking into account the tidal nature of the Hooghly and its daily fluctuations in water levels. Native green buffers are also planned to strengthen the riverbank, manage surface runoff and support riparian biodiversity.
The project will follow a zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) framework, with all wastewater generated on site planned to be treated and reused for non-potable purposes. The developer said no effluent will be discharged into the river.
The ghat represents an investment of more than ₹20 crore and is part of the wider ₹150-crore riverfront development, which also includes a riverside five-star hotel. Designed by architect Kapil Bhalla of Se-arch, the ghat is scheduled for completion ahead of the next Ganga Dussehra. The project is being developed in collaboration with and with the support of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK).
At the centre of the waterfront development is Eden Devprayag, a nine-acre luxury township on Lower Foreshore Road, Shalimar. The project comprises five towers of B+G+28 storeys, offering simplex and duplex residences. It forms part of Eden Realty’s larger 38-acre Kolkata Westshore vision along Shalimar Road.
Speaking about the initiative, Arya Sumant, Managing Director, Eden Realty Group, said the riverfront should be viewed as a shared inheritance rather than a private amenity. He said the project seeks to bring heritage, community and the river together while demonstrating how responsible development can contribute to the restoration of the riverfront.
The initiative also aligns with the broader national focus on river rejuvenation under the Namami Gange programme. Eden Realty said the project represents a collaborative approach involving private investment, the port authority and academic expertise, while keeping the civic riverfront accessible to the public.
Established in 2003, Eden Realty Group has delivered more than 7.1 million sq. ft., has 6.5 million sq. ft. under construction and has served more than 11,000 families.
