‘Shashti Pujo’ with a Heart: Jharna Bhattacharjee Celebrates Bengali Heritage Festival with Kolkata’s Iconic Rickshaw Pullers
While many mark ‘Shashti Pujo’ with rituals and family gatherings, cultural icon and social activist Jharna Bhattacharjee chose to spend the day on the streets—with the City Of Joy’s Heritage — the Hand-pulled Rickshaw Pullers.
Representing LIONS CLUB OF KOLKATA MAGNATES as its Cultural Advisor, Jharna led a heartfelt initiative to recognize the contribution of these rickshaw pullers—often overlooked, yet deeply embedded in Kolkata’s identity.
In her efforts, Jharna was joined by LIONS Magnates Convenor Sangita Das, Dr. Shanoli Ray, Subhajit Duttagupta, Manish Dhulia and social influencer Asish Basak (Charter President of LIONS MAGNATES).
Jharna handed over essential supplies and thoughtful gifts to the elderly rickshaw pullers who still work tirelessly under the city’s sun and rain.
“This is not charity—it’s respect,” Jharna said, gently placing a shawl on the shoulders of a visibly moved rickshaw puller. “They are part of our heritage. We must ensure their dignity and support their livelihoods.”
Known for her poetry and lyrics that celebrate human stories, Jharna’s real-life gesture mirrored her artistic philosophy. She also urged citizens to choose these traditional rickshaws when possible—not just as transport, but as a way to help sustain a heritage and the people behind it.
In a city racing ahead, this act was a moment to pause and reflect—a reminder that progress must carry compassion with it.
