IMA Bhubaneswar Marks Foundation Day with Tribute to Medical Pioneer
The Foundation Day of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bhubaneswar was observed with reverence and pride, in collaboration with the IMA Advance Medical Science (Odisha), commemorating both the past and present achievements in the field of medicine.
The event featured the 4th Dr. Manasa Charan Malaker Memorial Oration, a tribute to one of Odisha’s most respected medical pioneers. Dr. Malaker, a graduate of Calcutta Medical College and Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (Liverpool, UK), served as Civil Surgeon in the Government of Orissa. In 1935, he joined the Mayurbhanj State Hospital at the personal request of His Highness Maharaja Pratap Chandra Bhanjdeo, guided by the advice of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray, India’s first medical Bharat Ratna awardee.
Dr. Malaker’s contributions include establishing Odisha’s first operational X-ray machine and a modern clinical laboratory, laying the foundation for advanced diagnostic care in the state. Post-independence, he continued serving in the Orissa State Health Department before retiring as Civil Surgeon.
This year’s oration, themed “Doctors, Good Doctors and Great Doctors”, was delivered by Dr. Pradeep Kumar Patnaik, M.S., who reflected on the values and evolving responsibilities of medical professionals in contemporary healthcare.
The event witnessed an enthusiastic gathering of over 100 doctors from various regions of Odisha. Leading the proceedings were Dr. Bharadwaj Mishra, President of IMA Bhubaneswar, and Dr. Pratyush Kumar Ray, Secretary.
In a touching moment of recognition, Dr. Mishra, Dr. Sajalendu Malakar, Dr. Ray, and Parimal Malakar felicitated Dr. Patnaik for his thought-provoking address and his contribution to the ongoing dialogue on medical ethics and excellence.
The celebration was not just a tribute to a legendary physician, but also a reaffirmation of the core values that continue to inspire the medical community in Odisha.
