When Bengal’s ancient dhak tradition was on the verge of fading into oblivion due to neglect, cultural organization Banglar Sauhardya was formed in 2006 under the leadership of Sanjib Sarkar (popularly known as Master Da). Nearly two decades of relentless effort have transformed it into a massive family of over 37,000 members across 12 districts. The organization has conducted surveys on more than 26,000 dhaki families and has been creating diverse employment opportunities to restore economic stability to this traditional art form.
Founder Sanjib Sarkar believes, “An art form that carries a thousand years of heritage deserves both dignity and development. The dhak is not just a part of festivals—it is a symbol of Bengal’s identity.”
Pandit Subhash Singh Roy, a guardian of Bengal’s classical music, has infused fresh energy into the movement. He is currently training 12,000 dhakis on a regular basis, working to enhance their employment opportunities, financial security, and social dignity.
A strong pillar of support has been Surath Chakraborty, President of the National Journalist Commission, who stands firmly for the rights and recognition of artists.
Internationally acclaimed artist and ‘Kolkata Tilottama’ award-winner Sharmistha Roy Chowdhury is taking Bengal’s dhak art to the world stage. She has undertaken the responsibility of performance training and grooming both in India and abroad, opening up new horizons for the dhaki community.
Additionally, social worker Yajnasaseni Das and education enthusiast Ashutosh Majumder are actively contributing towards building a stable economic framework for dhaki families.
Under Sanjib Sarkar’s leadership, Banglar Sauhardya has evolved into not just a cultural movement, but a shining emblem of Bengal’s heritage and future.
