Asish Basak, Hello Kolkata News: Rela Hospital, a world renowned liver transplant hospital in Chennai, successfully hosted its inaugural Liver Run at Kolkata, aiming to raise awareness about liver disease and the importance of organ donations and quality of life after liver transplantation.
The Liver Run was officially flagged off by Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO, Rela Hospital, who lent his support to this important initiative. This landmark event seeks to bring together liver patients, their families, and the public to raise funds and increase awareness about liver health.
The Liver Run featured three categories 2.5 km, 5 km, and 10 km, allowing participants of all fitness levels to join.
The 2.5 km category is primarily for liver patients from the hospital, providing them a platform to showcase their resilience and highlight the importance of early detection and treatment. The 5 km and 10 km categories are open to the general public, encouraging people from all walks of life to come together in support of this noble cause.
Speaking about the event, Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Rela Hospital, shared, “We are incredibly proud to launch our first-ever Liver Run in Kolkata. This event provides an opportunity for us to unite liver patients, their families, and the community in a shared mission of raising awareness about liver disease, quality of life after liver transplantation, the significance of organ donation and quality of life after transplantation.”
Dr. Dinesh Jothimani, Director of Hepatology at Rela Hospital, said “Liver diseases are a growing global health concern, with more than 800 million people worldwide suffering from some form of liver disease. In India alone, an estimated 30% of the population is affected by fatty liver disease. This is mainly related to sedentary lifestyle amongst the public. Alarmingly, liver cirrhosis and liver cancer are now among the top causes of death in the country. Early detection and lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk, and events like ‘The Liver Run’ play a crucial role in raising awareness and inspiring people to take proactive steps in caring for their liver health.”
