​Leander Paes, one of India’s greatest sporting icons, becomes President of Bengal Tennis Association

       Mr. Hironmoy Chatterjee, who has been at the helm of affairs at the State tennis body for long, informed​ that the newly formulated National Sports Governance Act 2025 has been followed to the core while​ forming the new council whereby various personalities of sporting excellence have been incorporated,​ as per the norms and guidelines.

​     “If the Government of India enacts an Act, it is for the others to​ follow”,​  says Mr Chatterjee. He also added that BTA has taken all steps to ensure clear and transparency​ in governance and set an example for others to follow because after the AIFF, BTA is the first state body​ to adopt the act and abide by it.
With Paes now at the helm, Kolkata boasts two icons from different sports heading state associations —​ former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, having returned as President of the Cricket Association of​ Bengal after six years, last month.
The 18-time Grand Slam champion in men’s and mixed doubles was unanimously proposed as BTA chief​ last month.

​       Leander Paes, who had been serving as the Association’s Honorary Vice-President, has promised to​ take Bengal tennis to “greater heights”.
“Today is a very emotional day for me. I miss my father a lot. I have grown up playing junior tennis,​ under-10s, under-12s, under-14s at BTA, including the Limca Masters that used to come through South​ Club and BTA,” said Paes.

​    As Paes lines up his first serve as an administrator, the same pride could hold hopes for the Indian tennis.

​   “I am looking forward to this match,” the 52 year old said.
