Dhirendranath Datta: An Unsung LeaderSangbad Sochhar set to pay tribute to an unsung Hero of the Bengali Nation on his 140th Birth Anniversary
On the occasion of the 140th birth anniversary of Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta, a distinguished son of undivided India and a revered people’s leader, ‘Sangbad Sochhar’ is organising a solemn memorial meeting on 2nd November, 2026 at the Kolkata Press Club.
The programme is being organised at the initiative of Sangbad Sochhar newspaper and with the heartfelt inspiration of the respected Mohammad Nurul Islam, a Bangladeshi freedom fighter currently residing in the United States of America. The primary objective of this memorial meeting is to honour Dhirendranath Datta, who participated in India’s freedom struggle and, even after the Partition of the country, remained steadfast in his commitment to his motherland and continued fighting for the rights and dignity of the Bengali language. In February 1948, during the first session of Pakistan’s Constituent Assembly, Dhirendranath Datta boldly demanded that Bengali be recognised as one of the official languages of Pakistan. Standing firm in his conviction, he challenged the linguistic policy of the Pakistani leadership and made a historic appeal for the recognition of the language spoken by the majority of the people of East Bengal. His courageous stand sent a powerful message to Pakistan’s ruling establishment. His initiative and determination became an important source of inspiration for the Bengali Language Movement, which gathered momentum and reached its historic turning point in 1952. The movement ultimately became an integral part of the struggle for Bengali national identity and contributed to the emergence of an independent Bangladesh in 1971.Had this courageous Bengali leader not raised his voice in defence of his mother tongue on the floor of Pakistan’s Constituent Assembly, the course of Bengali linguistic and cultural history might have been very different. His historic intervention stands as a powerful reminder that language is not merely a means of communication; it is an essential part of a people’s identity, dignity and cultural heritage. For his firebrand nature, Dhirendranath Datta consequently became a target of the Pakistani ruling establishment. On 29 March, 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Pakistani occupying forces reportedly abducted him and his son, Dilip Datta, from their home. Both were subsequently subjected to brutal treatment and were killed. Their tragic fate remains one of the most painful chapters in the history of the Bengali people. There can be no doubt that this courageous patriot, who endured unimaginable persecution for his principles and convictions, deserves our deepest respect and heartfelt tribute. Honouring his memory is not merely an act of remembrance; it is a moral responsibility that transcends national boundaries and political divisions. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Mohammad Nurul Islam, who has consistently highlighted Dhirendranath Datta’s historic contribution to the Bengali Language Movement through his writings. Through his dedicated efforts, he has repeatedly brought the life, struggles and legacy of this neglected leader back into public consciousness.Although Mohammad Nurul Islam resides in the United States and is not an Indian citizen, his dedication to preserving the legacy of Dhirendranath Datta demonstrates that the history, language and cultural heritage of the Bengali people transcend geographical and political boundaries. On the occasion of Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta’s 140th birth anniversary, Sangbad Sochhar wishes to pay its deepest respects to this illustrious son of Bengal, whose invaluable contribution has not received the recognition it deserves in mainstream historical narratives.Sangbad Socchar firmly believe that the time has come for a renewed and comprehensive exploration of the life, ideals and historical contributions of this extraordinary Bengali leader. His story deserves to be read, discussed and remembered by future generations.Let us ensure that the courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of Dhirendranath Datta continue to inspire the Bengali people across borders and generations. Let his legacy become a lasting source of pride for Bengal and for all those who cherish the Bengali language.Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta, the Unsung Hero lives on in the hearts of those who believe that no language, no culture and no people’s identity should ever be suppressed.
