BOGS Builds Photo Gallery Honouring IVF Pioneer Dr. Subhas Mukherjee

In a heartfelt tribute to one of India’s most overlooked scientific pioneers, the Bengal Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (BOGS) has inaugurated a Photo Gallery in memory of Dr. Subhas Mukherjee, the reproductive medicine trailblazer who created the world’s second IVF baby in 1978, just months after the first was born in the UK.

Dr. Subhas Mukherjee, working in Kolkata during the 1970s, achieved a milestone that should have placed India on the global map of assisted reproduction. However, his groundbreaking work was met with ridicule and rejection from the local medical community at the time. Faced with public humiliation and relentless professional pressure, he tragically took his own life in 1981.

It wasn’t until over a decade later that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) officially validated his work, posthumously restoring his recognition as a visionary in reproductive science. His story remains a reminder of how the scientific community can sometimes fail its own pioneers.

Dr. Mukherjee’s close collaborator, Dr. Sunit Mukherjee, a cryobiologist who worked with him during those years, meticulously preserved memorabilia related to their IVF research. Before his death, Dr. Sunit Mukherjee generously donated these artifacts to BOGS, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

In 2025, under the leadership of BOGS President Dr. Basab Mukherjee, the society crafted a dedicated Photo Gallery showcasing rare documents, images, and preserved materials chronicling Dr. Subhas Mukherjee’s revolutionary yet underappreciated journey.

To mark the occasion, BOGS invited several of Dr. Mukherjee’s colleagues and contemporaries, who came together to share memories, reflect on his contribution, and collectively honour a man whose vision was far ahead of his time.

The Photo Gallery stands not only as a memorial to Dr. Mukherjee’s brilliance and resilience, but also as a symbol of belated justice and national introspection—urging today’s scientific community to support innovation, even when it challenges convention.
